Trade Union Rights

Understand your right to join a trade union, organise with your colleagues and stand up for better pay, working conditions and fair treatment.

You Have the Right to Join a Trade Union

Every worker deserves a voice in the decisions that affect their employment. Yet challenging unfair treatment, demanding better wages or raising concerns about working conditions can be difficult when facing an employer alone.

Trade unions exist to bring workers together, represent their interests and help them exercise their employment rights.

In the UK, workers have legal protections relating to trade union membership and activities. Your employer cannot lawfully dismiss you or subject you to certain forms of detrimental treatment because you belong to an independent trade union or take part in protected trade union activities.

You do not need your employer's permission to join a trade union.

Why Collective Organisation Matters

An individual worker raising concerns about unpaid wages, excessive workloads or unfair treatment may struggle to make their voice heard.

But when workers organise collectively, they can challenge workplace decisions together and demand meaningful changes.

Trade unions help workers raise disputes, seek representation and negotiate with employers over matters affecting their employment.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable legal requirements, workers may also have rights concerning trade union recognition, collective bargaining and lawful industrial action.

These rights are particularly important for cleaners and other outsourced workers, who may face decisions made by both their direct employers and the organisations benefiting from their work.

More Than Membership. Collective Strength.

At CAIWU, we bring cleaners and allied workers together to defend their employment rights and improve their working conditions.

Our members organise to challenge underpayments, oppose unfair reductions in working hours, defend jobs and demand safer workplaces.

Through collective organisation, workers can build the confidence and strength to challenge decisions that affect their livelihoods.

You do not have to wait until something goes wrong at work to become part of a union.

A stronger workplace begins with organised workers.

Join CAIWU and become part of a union where workers stand together for fair pay, dignity and respect.
