CAIWU statement on treatment of cleaners at Downing Street parties.
The Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union are deeply concerned following the findings in the recent report by Sue Gray, into the gatherings on government premises during the Covid pandemic at a time when severe restrictions were in force. We are saddened to see that there were multiple examples of a lack of respect towards and poor treatment of security and cleaning staff. Cleaners and security staff were on the front line throughout the pandemic and continue to provide a vital role within society in keeping the public safe and well. They deserve our sincere gratitude and no less.
We are encouraged that steps have been taken to introduce more easily accessible means by which cleaners and security staff can raise concerns, and we hope that working conditions will improve as a result.
We stand however, as ever, ready to support those facing poor treatment at work.
